I was able to find the light in the darkest of places. “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived” (2023)

I’m afraid that we often forget how many people and how much effort it takes to make a film. We go to the cinema or sit in front of a screen, press play, spend approximately two hours, decide whether we like it or not, perhaps have a little discussion after and that’s it. Perhaps we forget that it takes months or even years to produce those two hours for us. The reason why I’m starting my post this way is because the documentary I’m recommending today is about a kind of person that gets forgotten in the film industry. We recognise and appreciate main actors, sometimes the director, but the rest of the crew is rather praised by real cinephiles or people from that particular industry. David Holmes, who’s the star of today’s documentary, is a stunt double. Unfortunately, he doesn’t work as one, yet he’s remembered mostly because of his amazing job done in “Harry Potter” series of films where he played… Harry Potter. The boy who lived. From the very first part, little David was acting in all the physically difficult scenes, which Daniel Radcliffe couldn’t do or wasn’t recommended to do. In the end, Daniel was the main character and if anything had happened to him, the filmmakers would have been doomed. But losing a stunt double isn’t stopping the crew from shooting the film, as sad as it sounds. They just find another flexible and physically strong person, do a little make-up magic and voilà – they can be performing somersaults as Harry Potter. Stunt doubles work incredibly hard and risk a lot, yet in the film industry they are easily replaceable, unlike the main stars. Back to David – the reason why he stopped doing the job was because he had a horrible accident on set, about which you may learn more watching the documentary. Now, David is paralysed and after all these years, he’s telling us the story of his life, his acting career and also his incredible friendship with Daniel Radcliffe. They are both grown-up men, yet they met as children and they were sharing the experience of playing in one of the most popular series of films that has even been produced. David, as Daniel says, was like a big brother to him and the boys were spending a lot of time together, except just practicing for the scenes. Even though the last part of “Harry Potter” was released about 12 years ago, David And Daniel have stayed friends and they still support each other. I guess I won’t surprise you if I admit that I didn’t know about David before, but I’m a huge fan after watching the documentary. What he was doing on set is one thing, but I’m absolutely amazed by his personality and charisma. And I see that I’m not the only one. Daniel was lucky to have met such “big brother” in 2001 and it’s great to see this tandem together after all those years. Hope you find a moment to see the documentary about another boy who lived.

Always. “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts” (2022)

directed by Casey Patterson & Joe Pearlman

When I was a little human, I remember the first book of Harry Potter’s adventures being published and getting it for free in some Coca-Cola contest. Yes, I remember such things, I have a horribly good memory. So I got that book with an ugly stamp of Coca-Cola logo on one of the first pages (ruining books and people’s health, bravo), but I didn’t care. All I cared about was my dad reading this book for me in the evening. And from the very beginning, I was in love with it. The older I was getting, the more I was fascinated by Harry Potter and the world of magic. I consider myself incredibly lucky, because I was growing together with the story, both the books and the films. When I heard of this special documentary film about Harry Potter’s 20th anniversary, I thought that first, I’m so old, second, can’t wait to see it. I chose a calm evening for that and got back to Hogwarts one more time. Perhaps this documentary isn’t anyhow surprising, because it’s exactly what we would expect from a documentary about an anniversary. Yet, it’s something that is definitely worth watching if you grew up with Harry Potter. We get to see the people involved in the making of the series and listen to their memories from that time. I’m aware that they didn’t share the horrible moments because that wouldn’t sell, but I feel like everything they actually said in the documentary is true. They honestly created a lovely family, believed in the world of magic, supported each other and made sure that the whole experience becomes the most wonderful memory for everyone. You may learn several funny facts from behind the scenes, which can help you understand why they developed each part of the series in a specific way. For me it was quite fascinating as now I would rewatch the films and focus on the technical aspects, not only on the fun story. And there’s something that’s mentioned in the documentary, which I have to repeat here and agree with – this series will stay with us for a long time. I’m sure that our great-grandchildren will be still amazed by this magical world and will get the messages hidden in the story. Maybe you won’t be surprised by this production, but it’s not the point. Just grab a mug of hot tea, sit comfortably and enjoy the trip to Hogwarts for the last time. Or not the last because, luckily for us, we can return whenever we want.

It’s not another nerdy romance. “Guns Akimbo” (2019)

directed by Jason Lei Howden

I’d wanted to see this film since the day I saw its trailer. I normally don’t watch many action films, because they are like copy-paste. But this one seemed different. And surprisingly, as a person who doesn’t enjoy action films, I rated it higher than most people. Perhaps it’s just me, but I think it’s a very fresh production and certain jokes are definitely not for everyone. I mean, they are not laughing at farting or calling someone a “dick”, but for example: how to open a door if both of your hands are… attached to guns. Okay, it’s maybe strange, but I, personally, had a huge laugh at that. Anyway, the film is very much entertaining and Harry Potter is amazing in it. Yeah, I know, Daniel will be Harry forever, it’s settled. However, I have to tell you that I highly respect him for his other roles. I mean, he actually IS a great actor, and I’m not joking right now. Today’s film is a perfect proof for that. And if you’re a fan of “Black Mirror” series, I bet you will enjoy the story as well. Everything is happening in the future where a gang called Skizm has created some kind of a game, which is about live-streaming people killing each other in real life. Sound fun? Oh well, say hello to the probable future. Anyway, there are millions who watch their videos, so the gang is quite popular. However, the main character is Miles Lee Harris (Daniel Radcliffe), who has nothing to do with Skizm. He’s a nerdy computer programmer who loves trolling people on the Internet, especially Skizm, because he doesn’t like the idea of their live-streaming. One day, the gang comes to his place, drugs him and when Miles wakes up, he notices guns bolted to his hands. Soon he finds out that he’s in the game and his task is to kill another player, Nix (Samara Weaving). If he doesn’t do it, he dies. If he runs away from the town, he dies. If he gets killed by Nix, he dies. So basically, there’s a huge possibility that Miles may die. And it’s great he has the two guns, but how can he even try to kill anyone if he struggles to put this pants on? Honestly, the description may sound ridiculous, but the film really is entertaining and not clichéd at all. Considering the ending, I really wish to see next parts.
