People don’t realise how important innocence is to innocent people. “Evil Angels” (1988)

How would you look at a person who has killed their own child? Unless you’re some kind of psychopath I really hope you’d be full of anger and disgust. And now a different question: how would you look at a person who is said to kill their own baby? Perhaps the same, right? Even if there’s a pinch of chance that the parent is innocent, you’d still be overwhelmed by negative emotions and dislike towards the person. So if you want to explore this topic a bit further, I recommend you to see “Evil Angels”. We get to know a couple – pastor Michael Chamberlain and his wife Lindy (Sam Neill & Meryl Streep). They go camping together with their 3 children, one of which is a baby girl named Azaria. One evening, they are having a barbecue with friends when the baby starts crying in a tent. At this point Lindy goes to comfort the little girl, but she’s missing and the only thing the woman sees is a dingo with something in its mouth. Everyone starts looking for the child as Lindy is sure that it was taken by the wild animal. The girl is not found and while special services are taking care of it, the story about the child goes viral. However, instead of supporting the family, the majority of people begin to accuse the parents of murdering the baby and pretending it was just an accident. The public bases their opinion on the fact that Lindy seems unbothered and incredibly stoic for a mother that has just tragically lost her daughter. This leads to a series of quite unpleasant events which the family has to deal with. And for you, the viewers, it’s a guessing game – is Lindy actually guilty or not? Personally, I believe this film could have been done a bit better. To me the weakest points are the pace (way too slow) and the script (too many unnecessary scenes), so I’m not surprised the film was a box office disappointment. However, I appreciate the story itself and the way we, the audience, are included into it. From the beginning till the end we have no idea what’s the truth, so we feel like the jury. And while watching I tried to think what I would feel if the future of this family was in my hands. My opinion, purely based on random pieces of information, could put that woman in jail. Or, I could help a murderer avoid being punished. The game is actually the reason why you should watch this drama. Let me just say that Meryl Streep’s acting doesn’t help in making a decision – she really plays as if both scenarios were true. Quite creepy performance, but worth seeing.

SEP-PAH! “Iceman” (1984)

I was searching for something to watch and Netflix recommended me “Iceman.” I wasn’t sure why, because I’d never been interested in such productions. Well, life would be boring if we were watching only one type of films. Play pressed. We have two main characters. The first one is presented right away. His name is Stanley Shephard (Timothy Hutton) and he’s an anthropologist. Some explorers have invited him to join them since they’ve found a body. Not just any body. The man in the ice is probably about 40,000 years old. Imagine his upcoming birthday and the amount of candles on the cake. Sorry, I had to insert a bad joke. Moving on. Firstly, they want to thaw the body to perform an autopsy and learn as much as it’s possible about our ancestors. Fortunately or unfortunately, they manage to bring him to life instead. The iceman (John Lone) obviously freaks out, so the scientists decide to create an artificial environment for him, where they can keep observing his behaviour. However, Shephard doesn’t like the idea of treating the iceman as some kind of a lab rat and he tries to get closer to him. Both men do their best to communicate and learn about one another. At the beginning of this film I thought it’s adorable because it has some years and watching such productions always makes me melt inside. But then, when I saw the way they presented humanity in this production, I melted, froze and melted again. Absolutely fantastic idea. This film is a proof that you don’t need special effects and a bunch of superheroes to spread an important message. Perhaps some people see just a silly drama about a caveman, but I’m sure there are a few who can reflect on their humanity after watching it. I also need to mention John Lone for his creation of Charlie (the iceman). I honestly thought this man is 40,000 years old and he’s learning how to communicate. John Lone let me forget it’s a film and that’s something I appreciate a lot.

Shakespeare vs Kahlo. “Words and Pictures” (2013)

I didn’t expect to like this film that much. I needed a relaxing romantic comedy and thought “Words and Pictures” may be a fine choice. Oh it was fineeee. We get two main characters, as you might be guessing when it comes to romantic comedies. There’s a man and a woman. The man is Jack (Clive Owen) and the woman is Dina (Juliette Binoche). Jack is an English teacher fascinated and living in the word of words. Dina, however, is an Art teacher believing in the power of pictures. Accidentally, their students, hearing their teachers’ personal opinions, start thinking there’s a war between those two. Therefore Jack proposes a real but civilised war between words and arts. Sceptical at first Dina agrees to fight with her colleague believing it may encourage their students to develop their skills. Educational “war” makes the two teachers spend more and more time together. And you’re probably guessing what happens next. Still, those two are so funny and perfectly matched! As actors I mean. Clive Owen is this sarcastic guy making jokes over and over and Juliette Binoche, as a French, makes her character even more posh and artistically elegant. Wonderful choice! And the film doesn’t make you feel sick of those silly conversations like “oh I love you more” “no, I love YOU more!” etc. Also at some point I joined their battle and, to be honest, not sure whom I would support in the end. They were both adorable and hope they will make you smile as well.
