Call me ‘young lady’ again and I’m gonna put my foot in a place it’s not supposed to be. “Captain Marvel” (2019)

If you’ve been reading my blog for some time, you know exactly what I think of superhero films. Shortly speaking: they are fun, but if they didn’t exist, I wouldn’t care much. The only thing I’m amazed of and I’ll always respect is CGI and all those people working with it. And that’s the main reason I watch superhero productions. Because, let’s face it, the story is always the same, only some details change. So recently, I decided to see “Captain Marvel”, because why not. Free evening, no energy to watch anything mentally tiring, let’s go. I guess I don’t need to explain who Captain Marvel is, so I’ll focus on my thoughts after watching it. First of all, I’ve heard people don’t like Brie Larson in this role. And I’m not sure why. I mean, she’s acting a bit as if she was a managing director in some boring corporation, but I guess that was the point. Her character is actually an Air Force pilot, so don’t expect her to be overly cute, sexy or delicate. She’s confident, concrete , strong and brave – everything’s there. Besides, I like Brie as an actress, so maybe I’m not being totally objective, but she’s doing her job well and this time it wasn’t different. The second thing I loved was how they de-aged Samuel L. Jackson. Not sure if you’ve noticed, but nowadays we don’t have to make actors look younger using lots of makeup. Now, everything can change on the computer screen, which is equally fascinating and terrifying for me, but I still appreciate the work. And the last thing that I enjoyed in this film were jokes, but it’s typical for Mavel productions, so perhaps you’re not surprised. Basically, I had a nice evening with “Captain Marvel”. However, *SMALL SPOILER* Jude Law as the bad guy? Really? Horrible choice. He has superhero’s best friend’s vibes, not the villain’s vibes, but maybe that’s just me. *END OF SPOILER* Oh and I loved “Just A Girl” by No Doubt as the background for a fight scene. That was awesome.

Let’s kill him properly this time. “Avengers: Endgame” (2019)

directed by Anthony & Joe Russo

I’ve decided to write about “Avengers: Endgame” today because I guess some of us, after days of eating literally everything we spotted on the table, look just like Thor in this picture. Or at least we feel so. And yes, thinking of myself as a fat Thor today pushed me to write about this year’s Avengers’ film. Firstly I have to say that I’m not a big fan of superhero productions. It’s not that I think they are silly or I’m against films that are more about visual effects than the story itself. Whatever people like, give them that. As far as Avengers make people happy, why shouldn’t they be produced? Still, for me superhero films are very similar to each other and it’s hard for me to be excited about the plot, because I know exactly what will happen next. But I still watch them. Why? I think they are visual masterpieces and I truly admire people working on them. Those people spend months to make your favourite characters fly or kill the bad guys with some pow pow lights coming out of their hands. And that’s why I recommend you to see such productions. About “Endgame”, I think the story itself in this part is really boring. I’ve read somewhere that you can watch the beginning, then go for a break, get back for the climax and you won’t even feel like you’ve missed anything. And honestly, it’s true. Personally, I liked “Infinity War” part more. At least there was some thrill. Here, it’s walking, talking, walking, talking, pow pow, walking, talking, pow pow in a bigger group and the end. I know, all the Marvel fans are getting pissed off right now. I’m sorry, but mind the fact, that a lot of you admire this production because of what you saw before and when you see your beloved characters there’s an enormous nostalgia in your hearts. And I get it, we all have such films/series. And my opinion is also subjective, but as a person who’s not crazy about Avengers, I believe this last part could have been written better. I’ve also seen some opinions that the actors didn’t have a chance to show their best. Indeed, we have a bunch of incredibly talented actors who show up for some seconds, say a line of two and that’s it. Yet, I’m recommending you this film because of two reasons. One – let’s appreciate all the people that are unknown for the majority and thanks to whom we can enjoy quality effects. Two – let’s feel better watching fat Thor. You’re welcome!

You’re not like them. “The Glass Castle” (2017)

directed by Destin Daniel Cretton

Another random film that I’ve found recently and I’d like to share with you. I’d never heard about it before watching. So it was again this case “it’s either bad or too difficult”. This time it’s a mix of those two, in my opinion. But first let me present you the general story. We get a lovely big family, which is not like any family you know. I mean it may seem familiar, but it’s not. We have an alcoholic father (standard in dramas), we have an eccentric mother who cares more for the beauty of art than for her own children (not that typical, but it happens) and we get a bunch of redheads, aka children. The main character of the film is Jeannette (Brie Larson), the oldest daughter. She’s already a grown-up and she tries to manage her life, but it’s extremely hard to cut yourself off from your family, especially when you’re the oldest sister who should take care of her siblings. Their parents (Naomi Watts & Woody Harrelson) are not only strange alcoholics. They are also rebels who don’t mind packing their stuff and leaving whenever something goes wrong in life. That’s why the family doesn’t have a house, the children don’t go to school and “a full-time job” does not exist in their dictionary. It’s not only a story about a dysfunctional family, though. It actually shows our deepest desires. Who wouldn’t like to screw the system and just live their own life. To be the king of reality and not let others decide for us? Who wouldn’t like that? Exactly. The fact that those two weren’t taking care of their children in the right way, doesn’t mean they didn’t love them and wanted their best. But best in the Walls family way. What’s more, it’s based on a real story, so it shakes you better than a bartender on LSD. For me it’s slightly too long and I think the narration wasn’t planned that well, but generally it’s a must-know story.
